JULIA S RIEDEL

Julia S. Riedel is a textile designer and seamstress working through the lens of sustainability. Her practice, often materialised through the craft of patchworking, focuses on re-materialising responsibly sourced textiles into new forms while honouring the people and both the ecological and socio-political history embedded in them.

KATHE  KACZMARZYK

Kathe Kaczmarzyk is a weaver and artist working with natural fibres. Shaped by ten years in the food industry, her practice emphasizes human connection, transparency, and the relationships that underpin her materials and making. Through handweaving, she bridges the meaning of artwork with functional craft, celebrating the subtle irregularities inherent in both hand- and (wo)man-made processes.

POCKETS

POCKETS is a collaborative project by designer Julia S. Riedel and weaver Kathe Kaczmarzyk, produced made-to-order with fabrics handwoven from natural yarn by Kathe and crafted and sewn by Julia.

The design is inspired by Tie-On Pockets, worn mainly by women between 1650 and the late 19th century, reimagined for a contemporary context to explore new ways of owning and interacting with possessions. Originally functional tools for carrying everyday items, these pockets were worn independently from clothing — a carrier of social and economic signals.

True to her values, Julia’s sourcing can go beyond the textile medium: in Kathe, she found not just sustainable fabrics, but a skilled maker whose ethics, care for natural fibres, and craft align with her own commitment to responsible creation. Where historical tie-pockets were made from whatever durable fabrics were available, Julia and Kathe translate the independence, freedom and singularity of these objects into fully human-made POCKETS.

While Tie-On Pockets were mostly worn by craftswomen in the past, they were filled with tools, keeping essentials close at hand for whatever the day might bring for whoever was able to bridge their curiosity with pragmatism.

In a time when we long for real connection, isn’t the ability to preserve life’s unexpected joys one of the greatest forms of freedom?

Available in five colours and the option of a “lucky dip” - an individual surprise combination by Kathe.
